When Tempe-based Cartel Coffee partnered with the Marketplace One office building to open a downtown Phoenix location, the goal was the make the coffee shop as compact and efficient as possible, with a modest budget. The coffee operations could fit in a small space, but in order for the business to be successful, it needed a larger cafe lounge where patrons could sit and enjoy their beverages. Through creative and strategic planning, the architecture team designed a unique layout with a 200-square-foot coffee shop in an empty space adjacent to the lobby (complemented by downtown’s first walk up coffee window) and an 800-square-foot waiting area that makes better use of Marketplace One’s open lobby. Additionally, Cartel’s interior design was refined by maintaining their signature natural look of plywood and heavy metals from their flagship location, while upgrading to more polished finishes that elevate the brand.
